Here’s what else I use my smartphone for: After I wake up, I
check my daily calendar to see
just what I’m supposed to be
doing that day. I look at the
weather forecast so I can dress
appropriately (walking through
icy slush in tennis shoes with a
cane is no fun). I then look at
Facebook to see what’s new and
interesting, who’s going where
that day, who’s doing what.
Later in the day, I can use
iBooks to read a book, or if I’m
too tired, I can listen to one
instead (purchased from
Audible.com). When I am really,
really fatigued—most of you with
MS know what I mean—I can
just play checkers, watch a movie,
or listen to relaxing music. My
smartphone helps me rest when I
am tired and be more productive
when I am feeling up to it.
It’s doable
I know I sound like a walking
advertisement, but really, most
of the things I do on my iPhone
are for free—many of the apps
I use were included with it. My
primary expense is what I pay
for Internet access. Many cell-phone services offer free smartphones when you sign a contract
for service.
I also know that using
new technologies can be very
daunting for many. Trust me,
I know. I’ve been trying to
talk my mom into getting a
smartphone for two years now.
But it’s learnable, especially with
the help of someone who is
patient and has a good grasp of
the technology. Ask a friend or
family member—many users are
happy to help others learn the
ropes.

care of his four-year-old child and works
on his writing in
Madison, Wis. He is
always looking for
new technology.
