This isn’t just a job …
Accepting the offer to become the Society’s president and CEO was a humbling moment. I was acutely aware of both the colossal responsibil- ity and the remarkable privilege that accompanied this opportunity to serve the millions of people whose lives are touched by multiple sclerosis. I could not help but reflect on the path—and the people—that have led me here. First, of course, I thought of Joyce Nelson. Her openness and humility have provided me with an inspirational and powerful model of servant leadership. I am grateful for her example of graciousness and courage, and I will do every- thing in my power to continue building the MS Movement that is her legacy. But long before I knew Joyce, I knew that I wanted to focus my life on helping others. Community service was an expectation in my family, and I was just a teenager when I realized that each person has the ability to make a difference in the lives of others. I was especially inspired in my volunteer and internship work with people who, despite experiencing extraordinary hardship, were positive and resilient. I wanted to learn from them. What was it that enabled them to overcome circumstances that might have devastated others? Could those traits be learned? Could I help? When I joined the National MS Society I had the chance to learn first- hand what empowers people when challenges emerge: getting accurate infor- mation, connecting with others who share your experiences, knowing you are not alone, knowing that someone cares, and finding the right resources to address specific challenges. I met people who were confident problem- solvers and assertive self-advocates, and I realized I could become a partner in helping others develop the skills they needed. I knew I had found my life’s work. I was hooked. After 26 years with the Society, I am still learning. This isn’t just a job … it is a mission. I know many of you share that feeling with me. I’m honored and delighted to be working with you. We have critical work to do. Our goals are ambitious; our determination is unwavering; our unified focus is powerful. We have a collective devotion to stop progression, restore lost function, and end MS forever—while never forgetting to address the complex day-to-day challenges of people who live with this disease. Together, we will see our mission through to a world free of multiple sclerosis. Cyndi Zagieboylo President & CEO National MS Society 733 Third Avenue, 3rd Floor New York, NY 10017 Cyndi@nmss.org
