could ride it in his honor for
Bike MS.
A ndrew McCasker, 50, of the Greater Washington, D.C., area, spends almost as much time thinking about fundraising through Bike MS
as he spends training. Last year, his team raised $33,000 for multiple
sclerosis research. He recommends drafting a very personal email to
reach out to friends, family and acquaintances. “You need to get past
the feeling that you are ‘asking people for money’ and instead know
that you are asking them to contribute to a cause,” he says. “Because
that’s what we’re doing, and the fact that there has been progress in
research makes it feel like the money is actually doing some good.”
Rex Parker, 43, of Boise, Idaho, who was the top fundraiser for
the Bike MS event in Idaho last year, uses a similar approach.
“I rode in honor of my brother and was surprised by how
excited others were by my personal story,” he says.
