Expressing emotions shouldn’t be
left to chance
• Many people with multiple sclerosis (MS) also suffer from a
neurologic condition called pseudobulbar affect (PBA), which
causes sudden, involuntary outbursts of crying or laughing
• An estimated 10% to 20% of people with MS are thought to have
symptoms of PBA
• More than a million Americans suffer from PBA, including people
with other underlying neurologic conditions such as Lou Gehrig’s
disease (ALS), stroke, and traumatic brain injury
