Clinicians have several ways of assessing the impact of
MS, and of determining whether
new treatments are working.
The Expanded Disability Sta-
tus Scale—or EDSS—looks
at neurologic signs and symp-
toms. The Timed 25-foot Walk
computes walking speed. The
Paced Auditory Serial Addition
Test measures how fast and how
accurately a person is processing
information. All these are impor-
tant, but increasingly researchers
are seeking to incorporate “qual-
ity of life” in tracking the success
of MS treatments.
