ALERT LowVision
Solutions for the
workplace
by Eric Metcalf
MS-related vision problems can present roadblocks in the paths of the most skilled and dedicated employees. But there are some ways to work
around blurriness, dark spots and other symptoms.
If sophisticated solutions are not enough, steps can
be taken to refocus skills in new areas where vision
impairment won’t be such a problem.
Use the tools already on your computer. If
you rely heavily on a computer at your job, the
accessibility features of many common software
programs offer a quick (and free) way to see your
work more easily. Most browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome include
a feature that allows the user to enlarge the size
of text. The zoom feature in MS Word, Adobe
Acrobat and other commonly used programs can

of the monitor, such as the Max-View Telescopic
Adjustable Magnifier, can be found for under
$100. Software can also greatly magnify the contents of the screen. Options start at about $60 and
include the Ai Squared Zoom Text Magnifier.
Other freestanding, lighted magnifiers can help
a person see the details of coins and other small
objects, as well as read books, brochures and other
printed material with small type.
Let a machine read to you. There are several
scanners that will read text and speak it aloud to
you. These range in size from hand-held pen-type
devices to machines about the size of a traditional
scanner; still other versions come as software
that uses a scanner and your computer. Options
include the Quicktionary 2 by Wizcom and the
Kurzweil 1000 software.
