A great season for
scholarships
The cards seemed stacked against Rebecca Merlenbach,
the 2011 Society’s Presidential
Scholar. Not only was she diagnosed with MS at age 15, but
without a stable family situation
at home, she had to pay for her
own school fees, food and transportation. Yet she found hope
and meaning in her life—and for
that, she credits MS.

A funding win for
MS research
With bipartisan support and the hard work of MS
activists nationwide, the Congressionally Directed Medical
Research Program (CDMRP)’s
MS research program received a
modest gain in funding.
In this difficult economic
climate, the increase from $4.5 to
$4.8 million for MS research in the
current year is a significant achievement. This funding stream, which
must be renewed each year, has
now provided $17 million to support our strategic objectives.
Funding for the Lifespan
Respite Care Act survived but
did not increase.
