issues should be sure they are
mobile enough to handle walking
or playing with a dog or cat.
“We hear from people about
falling when they were walking their dog. It’s like, ‘The
dog went after a squirrel,’ ” Dr.
Finlayson said.
Improving skills. If poor
balance and lack of strength
raise the risk of falls, will bal-
ance and strength exercises offer
some protection? “It makes sense
intuitively, but we haven’t got a lot
of data that conclusively says that’s
the thing to do,” Dr. Finlayson
said. Researchers have been testing
the effectiveness of a weighted
vest-like garment, which may
help improve balance for people
with MS. “But, approaches that
improve balance don’t always lead
to fewer falls,” she cautioned.
